The Minneapolis, Minnesota duo Bad Bad Hats are named after a little-known song from “Madeline,” a beloved children’s book series about a mischievous young girl and her yellow-clad classmates. Founded by singer/songwriter Kerry Alexander and guitarist Chris Hoge, the band traffics in similarly playful concepts and warm scenes of youth. Bad Bad Hats are celebrated for crispy, lived-in melodies, big choruses that stick for days, and an easy musicianship that carries across their eclectic, wide-ranging releases.

The band's lead singer Kerry Alexander grew up between Tampa, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama. As a child, she was a student of the glossy MTV pop that defined the early 2000s, as well as the David Bowie and Tom Petty CDs her parents would play while making dinner. Singer songwriters like Alanis Morissette, Kim Deal, and later, Michelle Branch, were an early inspiration for Kerry: after discovering songwriting as a profession while watching American Idol, the young teenaged Kerry began filling binders with songs, planning to one day write hit records for stars.

As her confidence grew, Kerry began testing her performance chops at open mic nights, and eventually began sharing demos on Myspace, where she first connected with Chris Hoge, a savvy guitarist and classmate at the small liberal arts school Macalester College. The pair’s chemistry was undeniable, sharing common tastes in songwriting and sound, and they flourished creatively--and, soon, as a couple. They refined demos together and gigged around the Twin Cities, where they received consistently strong responses from friends who’d come to their shows. Soon, Kerry and Chris were assembling their first EP, "It Hurts," and catching the ear of local indie labels. After fleshing out the line up with bassist Noah Boswell, Bad Bad Hats was officially born.

"Psychic Reader," BBH’s debut LP, arrived in 2015. Led by the ebullient single “Midway,” the album highlighted the band’s cinematic sound, punchy rhythm sections, and Kerry’s heart-aching vocals. With "Psychic Reader," the band expanded their audience beyond local Twin Cities venues, as their music spread organically via college radio and shared links. New fans seemed to discover the music daily, their growth coincided with a renaissance in young bedroom musicians via streaming through the 2010s. With their follow up full length albums “Lightning Round” (2018) and “Walkman” (2021), Bad Bad Hats expanded their sound and look, with hilariously DIY music videos that cast the band as ice hockey players, Elvis impersonators, secret agents and more. In the years since their initial noodling around St. Paul, Bad Bad Hats have toured globally with peers like The Beths and Hippo Campus, and storied acts like The Front Bottoms and the aforementioned Michelle Branch, who picked them up for her 2022 headlining world tour. It was a full-circle moment for Kerry, one that she made clear on stage at each show.

Last January, Kerry, Chris, and longtime bandmate Con Davison cozied up under frigid winter in Chris and Kerry’s Twin Cities home, writing and recording their latest, self-titled LP. Each day for two weeks, Kerry would make sandwiches for lunch (tuna salad on Tuesdays), and the crew would get to work in the basement home studio, stacked to the brim with gear. The group recorded more quickly than usual, and even incorporated a few songwriting prompts sent in directly from their fans as jumping-off points. Where BBH are typically known for big song topics like love and heartache, Kerry took to smaller ideas this go round—included are songs inspired by parking tickets, scorching Tampa grocery store lots she remembered from her youth, and other autobiographical scenes woven into dancefloor-ready numbers.

Today, Bad Bad Hats are back to their founding duo, and their upcoming record is the band’s first time self-producing, with a freewheeling, pristine tone and several unexpectedly funky turns. The new album suggests a band still having deep fun creating and playing, inviting listeners new and old to live life to their heartfelt tunes. "Bad Bad Hats" will be available on April 12th, 2024 via Don Giovanni Records.

Tracklist:

Credits:

Stand by your friends that are hurting.

That’s what New Jersey power punks Teenage Halloween do through soaring arrangements of melodic angst, wracked vocals that insist “I love you so much I would die for you”, and passion-packed two-minute dispatches tackling topics from gender euphoria, to state abuses, and an eternal quest for mental wellbeing. The results are potent punk vistas that document young queer life at the edge of America.

At the heart of vocalist and guitarist Luk Henderiks’ lyrics is an urgent longing for community. Despite their often strikingly personal vulnerability, these songs reach out to the wider world, striving to hold themselves and those around them accountable for their actions and to make space for those that need to be heard.

In 2020, the band released their self-titled debut album via storied Garden State label Don Giovanni and swiftly won over a host of tastemakers. BrooklynVegan placed it at #10 on their Best New Punk Albums Of 2020, while Sterogum hailed them on their 40 Best New Bands Of 2020. American Songwriter, Paste, and KEXP brought further kind words to the table.

Having been unable to tour the album on its release in pre-vaccine times, the band hit the road with abandon in late 2021 and beyond, notching over 140 shows on their belts; including their first national US tour, an invitation to showcase at SXSW, and dates with Algernon Cadwallader, Chris Farren, Good Riddance, Say Anything and many more. These shows invariably deliver a calling card of unrelenting energy, wry wit, and warmth.

In February 2023, the group headed into Headroom Studios in Philadelphia, PA, under the guiding hand of producer Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Beach Bunny, Joyce Manor), and tracked the 13 dispatches on isolation, uncertainty, and hope for better days, that make up Till You Return. This second full-length outing (due for Oct 20th release via Don Giovanni) finds the band, which operated as a ‘rotating cast’ in it’s early years, now firmly entrenched as an essential four-piece comprised of Henderiks alongside Eli Frank (guitar, vocals), Tricia Marshall (bass, vocals) and Peter Gargano (drums). The quartet maintains the vital energy of their previous incarnations but brings an even more focused punch to the arrangements that leaves greater room for Henderiks’ lyrics. Fans of the band will also have noticed the creative assent of Marshall who takes the vocal lead on multiple songs that have become defining features of the band’s recent live shows and which bring a fresh new viewpoint to the band’s ongoing sonic mission for a more equal and just world.

Tracklist:

1. Their music owes as much to the twang of country as it does to the fuzz of grunge, and it’s a winning combination. Lead single “Sugar” sits somewhere between Bully and SPICE, a gritty slice of feedback-drenched rock ‘n’ roll that immediately makes it clear where Rodeo Boys’ passions lie–in loud, crunchy, catchy alt rock. “Dog Leg” plays out like a supersized take on classic rock, all roaring solos and guttural hooks, and epic closer “Tomboy Radio” is a proggy masterclass in dynamics. Home Movies hardly lets up all through its 40 minutes, the space folk of “Hail Mary” allowing a couple minutes to breathe, but it all seems to zip by. Formed in 2005 in New Brunswick, NJ, the trio has consistently created a hearty, surprising mix of indie-, alt-, punk- and stoner-rock, all with their original line-up of Paternoster, “King Mike” Mike Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums).

Released on February 17th by Don Giovanni Records, Desire Pathway was recorded at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios (where Nirvana recorded In Utero) and produced by Matt Bayles (Foxing, Pearl Jam, Mastodon, et al). Described by NPR affiliate WDET as “perfect for late-night freedom cruising on the outskirts of town,” the music is sophisticated and nocturnal, metabolizing ‘70s arena rock and Krautrock as readily as the post-Fugazi cannon on which its members were raised. KIND BEAST pays little homage to Hoen and Jaquint’s teenage bands (Thoughts of Ionesco and Small Brown Bike, respectively) and finds itself most often compared to mature constituents of the rock/pop pantheon such as Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, and Queens of the Stone Age while discerning listeners pinpoint a deeper influence of the great indie labels of yore (Touch and Go; Dischord).

“I love Fugazi and I love The Cure; I love Can and I love Zeppelin; I love James Brown as much as I love Gang of Four and when I sing, my headspace is more Depeche Mode than Drive like Jehu, so I don’t know what to make of it…” says Hoen. “I don’t really do nostalgia. But certain sensibilities are baked into my hands and voice from having loved Black Flag and Leonard Cohen in equal measure for most of my life. But it’s also the writing of Denis Johnson. Or Sam Shepard… literary atmospherics are every bit as much an influence as far as the vibe I want in music.”

Their latest single, “Highway Madness,” is an homage to Hoen’s ongoing obsession with all-night drives and the open road, which he and Jaquint first indulged in their life of van tours in the pre-cellphone age.

“I don’t really vacation; I drive long distances and roll the dice on lodging. With or without hallucinogenics, you start to confront aspects of the Self once you’ve been going long enough. It’s for anyone who craves the long drive… losing yourself in order to reach a moment of internal disintegration. I first heard John on the first New Lost City Ramblers album in 1958. We originally met in the ‘70s. When we got together again in the aughties, John was saddened by the loss of several close friends he had been playing with for decades.

I heard that Sam Shepard and family had moved to New York, so I called and asked if he wanted to come over and do some music. He asked, “Can I bring my kid?” and I said, “Sure”. I had read that he had two kids and they had all been living in Minnesota. Walker was the kid he brought, a 17-year old, a few months younger than my daughter Zoë. It turned out Walker had been playing banjo less than a year, and could do some stuff that I couldn’t and I’d been playing for almost sixty. If you’ve heard Patti Smith’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, that’s Walker on banjo.

Here’s where the cool part comes in: Walker had been learning a bunch of Roscoe Holcomb songs, and had an uncannily similar High Lonesome voice (yes, it’s a style) as Roscoe Holcomb. John Cohen was the person who found, filmed and recorded Roscoe Holcomb in Kentucky, in the late ‘50s. When John heard Walker singing Roscoe–– nailing Roscoe, actually––he was deeply moved.

Shortly afterwards, I met Eli Smith, who joined the band that had recently been joined by Walker and Sam. Walker had been playing with a fiddler named Craig Judelman at Bard, where they had been attending school. Eli joined them to form a trio, the Dust Busters, which ended up touring with John Cohen for several years. Both Eli and Walker, along with John, were more deeply into traditional music than I was. In the early ‘60s I became more interested in popular music than traditional, although my love of trad has remained strong, as this album attests.

Eli, Walker and John recorded with me as members of the Ether Frolic Mob, and Eli and Walker were also on Have Moicy! 2: The Hoodoo Bash. We have started work on another project: Let’s Swarm Smith! The Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan and Louisville Fiddle/Mandolin Swarm. Regarding Let’s Swarm Smith!––after seeing Jenny Scheinman perform her violin magic with Bill Frisell, I talked to her about that sound that happens when a minimum of three or even more violins play together. “Yes,” she said, “The Swarm. Like bees.” “Yes,” I said. “Perfect! That’s the word I’ve been looking for!”
Hence our albums Holiday for Strings, The Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan Fiddle/Mandolin Swarm and the upcoming Let’s Swarm Smith!, which will mainly be a trad-yet-modern take on the seven fiddle tunes on the Harry Smith Anthology, which to me remains the best collection of fiddle tunes I’ve ever heard. Seven songs were not enough for an album, so we will be rounding out Let’s Swarm Smith! with some cool surprises. This time around Walker could only squeeze in two days to record before he went back to Louisville, so next time we’ll be sure to block out at least a week for a more fine-tuned effort.

Some last thoughts: I really love playing with these guys, and recording with Dok Gregory. Walker and Eli are sort of idealized sons to me in a strange and nifty way and, in the same strange and nifty way, Dok is sort of my brother. And all the bands I/we have going now––the Wildernauts, the Ether Frolic Mob, the Atomic Meta Pagans, the Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel band, as well as the upcoming duo + group with Jane Gilday–– are extended family, multi-generational entities. Originally everyone was in their teens, twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, sixties and seventies (Walker to John Cohen), and now they’re in their thirties to eighties, with each decade in between represented. I’ve always liked playing with peeps from all age groups, as the multi-generational prospective does a much better job of, metaphorically speaking, covering the musical/cultural waterfront.

Musically speaking, I’m a serial polygamist. I like people I can play with long-term. The longer people play together, the deeper the intuitive bond becomes. For additional details about my general musical approach, for those who give an actual fuck, go to the Perfect Sound Forever site and read my piece on Freak Folk. Freak Folk is a dumb phrase, like hippy and hipster––ever meet anyone who says, “I’m a hipster?”. Those all generally describe, however vaguely, things that sort of actually exist.
-Peter Stampfel

-----

I think it was the summer of 2007. He plays the banjo, too.” Peter said, “Great!” and invited me to his house to play some music. I’ve been playing with Peter ever since, enjoying his gravity, curiosity and forceful yet democratic musical presence––to my great benefit. The years of playing together have opened my music in ways that could not have occurred otherwise.

It was probably several months after our first meeting that I attended a music party at Peter and Betsy’s apartment. It was there I met Walker and John Cohen. We went on to form an old-time string band, first called the Dust Busters and then the Down Hill Strugglers. Playing music with Peter and Walker, and playing old-time music with John and Walker have been my two connected pillars of music.

The songs on this album are a variety of things we have played over the years and offer further testament to the depth of Peter’s repertoire. It’s great to hear him sing country! This album also presents songs that Peter re-wrote, or were written by some of the great songwriters that have been around him over the years. I brought in one song, “Picking Dandelions” and an instrumental, “Wildernaut Rag”. We end with a free-form banjo frolic, for good measure.

It was a pleasure to spend time making this album with Peter, Walker and Dok Gregory. Register wails against America’s foremost refrains –jury and peers and whole truths– in lyrics hefty with reconciliation and metaphor. “A blind eye, A blind eye is all justice knows/ Of the truth of what happened in Scottsboro/ Come on now, this story’s not that old.” Contrary to Register’s demand for account, the American south knows no shame.

Balancing the album is Register’s odes to white, working class reckoners-- Ella May, Maureen, Soni Wolf– that encases their unsung acts of defiance in mid-tempo rhapsodies. The aptly-titled “Blue,” is a diagnosis of Joni Mitchell’s unchecked iconoclasm. Little known fact: the cover of Joni Mitchells’ 1977 album, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter featured Mitchell in a blaxploitation era pimp suit, afro wig, and Blackface. “Blue”’s gutsy call-out challenges the conditions that still allows Mitchell amnesty, even after she traded her counterculture folk for jive turkey racism.

Register’s literary acumen leads to exalting lesser known white, southern, and queer freedom fighters and allowing leftist liberation struggles the air of legend generally reserved for America’s Wild West fetishes. Even in compositions that most closely resemble love songs (like “Water to Wine,” “Some Boy,” and “Traveler’s Cross”) Register never grabs the artificially-colored bouquet or strums an acoustic verse to woo a corseted lover. Register prefers thorny things growing amidst the piss weeds, the fist-high, belligerent ballad that heralds love as the heartbeat of change.

Register is also contributing a queer lens to the southern rock ethos. By way of supporting cast, Sinclair Palmer (bass), Joe Westerlund (drums), and Matt Phillips categorically deliver. Check out the title track for a perfect example of the band’s ability to travel between gritty responsiveness and tendern reflection at Register’s lyrical instruction.

Whether grappling with the constrictions of gender expressions on dating apps (“How Do You See Me”), evoking the semi-autobiographical loneliness of Dorothy Allison’s Carolina bastards (“Maureen”), or daring white folks to “get right with their history of compliance in racial capitalism” (“Loamlands”), Register affirms that songwriting, at its best, is a gross but necessary confrontation.

Ultimately Register and Meltdown Rodeo (both the newly named band and album) have achieved in eleven songs something the south has only half-heartedly attempted – undoing generational curses by retiring “bless your heart” lip service.

Damn if we can’t all benefit from a little melting down.

– shirlette ammons

Tracklist:
1. The first 125 copies of the War Poems We Rested LP will include this poetry collection featuring Sadie Dupuis, Hanif Abdurraqib, Lee Renaldo, Jackie Clark, Sara Jaffe, Rose Zinnia, Amber Tamblyn, Alejandro de Acosta, Jeremy Michael Clark, and Peter Davis.

Tracklist:
1. Road, known in part for her zines, books, tarot cards, and album art, as well as her time in Brooklyn based pop-punk band The Homewreckers. As Choked Up, Road has been accompanied by a rotating cast of bandmates, a decision that many songwriters are pushed towards by the practical challenges of keeping a consistent band. For her upcoming LP, Mala Lengua, Cristy recruited her “dream band”, joining up with long time friends and collaborators at Our Wicked Lady studios in Brooklyn. Cristy is joined on Mala Lengua by drummer Tommy Hottpants, guitarist Miski Dee Rodriguez, and longtime Choked Up bassist Rose Bomberg.

Returning to a recurring theme in Road’s work, Mala Lengua blends the personal and the political, telling love stories impacted by a crooked and warped status quo. The feeling of falling love while the world is falling apart is a frequent creative stomping grounds for Choked Up, returning across releases. For Road, this is an opportunity to discuss her experience as a queer latina woman and the challenges that come with it while also telling a story that is personal and emotional. Road explains “every song is about being in love or falling in love, but under the guise of some kind of bullshit.”

The opening track, Tragic Bullshit, distills this concept into a minute of classic pop-punk. A bouncy opening bassline acts as a springboard for a rush of guitars as Road launches into a rapid fire snarl of lyrics. Road describes Tragic Bullshit as a “fuck the world, everything sucks, let’s run away together” song, and the band attacks with the reckless abandon of a powerful crush. Nuts4Nuts dives deeper into the specifics of the “bullshit” that defines these relationships. Painting a picture of an early Covid New York, Nuts4Nuts looks out at a suffering city and finds hope in the people. Half of the song was written pre-covid, inspired by the New York queer-core scene, paying tribute to the strong sense of community Road felt.

Sonically, Choked Up draws a heavy influence from 90’s East Bay punk and pop-punk, but Road’s appreciation for the emotive pop of her youth, including Selena, Cyndi Lauper, and Shakira, is a subtler force, present in the record’s more hopeful moments. Working with producer Jade Payne, the band sought out a raw garagey sound, capturing the energy of the new lineup. There are two solo tracks snuck between the full force of the four piece band, the reflective serenade “In Your Dreams” and the snarky self-titled closer “Choked Up”.

Though Mala Lengua draws on a baseline of righteous anger, a love for community shines through despite the “bullshit”. While her illustration allows her the opportunity to express frustration with an unjust status quo, her music captures the parts of life that happen in between politics. Feeling pigeon holed into the themes of her visual art, Road explains “its an annoying task to be expected to be a certain way because you’re a woman or you’re latina or you’re queer”. Choked Up pushes against that expectation by making simple, catchy pop-punk rooted in everyday feelings.

The bands 2019 debut “Dichoso Corazon” is a love letter to the broken hearted, grappling with the experience of falling in love while falling apart. We love Jawbreaker, we love Selena. Why can’t I have fucking feelings?” Road asks. At the time of Dichoso Corazon’s original release, Choked Up’s lineup included Wes Ruiz and Rachel Alicia of Baby Got Back Talk and Gibbons, as well as bassist Rose Bomberg, and while it isn’t a formative influence in Road’s songwriting, the rest of the band’s interest in 2000’s emo became another ingredient in the band’s sound.

Two tumultuous years out from it’s initial release, Dichoso Corazon is being reissued on CD in celebration of Choked Up’s signing to Don Giovanni Records. On her first two releases Emma channeled the experiences of coming out and trans life into raw and personal folk punk, recording mostly at a friend’s studio whenever they had surprise availability. The sudden nature of these sessions meant they often captured stripped down versions of the songs, arranged to be quickly and easily recorded.

On her upcoming self-titled LP Emma recontextualizes these songs through the reflective lens of hindsight. After recording the original versions at impromptu sessions, Emma entered the studio for 2 weeks with the intention of rerecording a selection of tracks with the fullness that they were originally imagined. With support of drummer Cody Kutilla, Emma built out the arrangements for a full band. Having the opportunity to develop these songs with intent and time, they evolved into something new entirely. Tracks like “Internet Ads” and “Family” have pivoted from their original folk punk fury to dynamic chamber pop confessionals. Others like “Sweaters in Summer” are beefed up with trumpets and gang vocals. Pianos, horns and woodwinds fleet in between theatrical vocals and punchy guitars, coming together as a more versatile and expressive version of these songs.

Thematically, the LP closes its focus in on the early days of Emma’s coming out process, telling stories that reflected where she was in her life at the time they were written. In returning to these songs with newfound perspective, Emma infuses them with grandiosity and new life. With so much happening between the writing and rerecording of these songs, it is fitting that these songs have been transformed through the rerecording process. “Transitioning (To a Life Without You)” begins as a traditional power-pop, but explodes into a heavy halftime breakdown complete with fuzzed out bass and guitar heroics. 2018’s “Giving Up is Sooo Last Year” is split into two parts, the Django Reinhardt inspired “(Giving Up Interlude)” and the full band jazz romp “Giving Up”. “Gender is Boring”, which was originally recorded as a folky gender manifesto on 2018’s Grrrl Angst, is transformed and expanded into emotionally maximalist piano pop. Meshed between the keys and horns are crowdsourced gang vocals from dozens of online trans friends and fans. Going all in on revisiting old songs, Emma even pulls out a cover of “Internet Ads”, a song written by her friend Scout Seshimo of the band Bogsey. Having sung backup vocals on the original track, a synthy folk punk tune, Emma reimagines “Internet Ads” as a Vanessa Carlton-esque piano ballad. In re-examining this time of her life through old songs, Emma goes a step beyond increasing the fidelity, adding a sense of reflection, clarity, and pride.

Tracklist:
1. Bains and the Williamson brothers can also be found collaborating with artists like Lonnie Holley and Swamp Dogg, lending their bombast to truck-bed protests of Donald Trump and Roy Moore, playing benefit shows for striking Alabama coal miners and Southern Black LGBTQ liberation organizations, and presenting gospel-music live streams for Birmingham and Atlanta food banks.

While the Glory Fires have spent a decade propagating what the New York Times calls “pandemonium with a conscience,” in recent years, as the band drove their 400,000+-mile van between shows, they found themselves listening to records that were more produced, arranged, and textured than their own past work, to records that struck them as timeless and immense, ones that invited you in, to get lost in the details. On many bleary-eyed interstate drives, they talked about wanting to make a classic record–not a transparent document of their playing live with the occasional embellishment–but a record. They talked about working with a producer who had made such albums. About taking Bains’s songs and deconstructing them, stripping them down to their most minimal elements, reimagining them, and building them back up again. They talked about closely considering arrangements. Digging into their varied influences. Swapping instruments. Getting high-fidelity sounds. Inviting guest musicians. Incorporating percussion and synthesizers and horns and strings. Maybe even doing a song or two without a blaring electric guitar, or even–gasp–without a guitar at all.

So, that’s what they did. They contacted Athens, Georgia’s David Barbe, whose work with the Drive-By Truckers, Sugar, Son Volt, Vic Chesnutt and countless other artists has earned him a legendary reputation amongst Southern independent rockers, and they agreed to set about bringing this vision to fruition. After months of recording demos with John Paul Foster in Montevallo, Alabama and going over arrangements with Texas punk stalwart Tim Kerr, who the band calls their “coach,” the band decamped to Athens to record with Barbe at Chase Park Transduction in December of 2019. Soon after laying down the initial tracks, the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, and the usually hard-touring trio soon found themselves at home with yet more time to consider, flesh out, and arrange this new batch of songs. The result is an album whose levels of dynamics, nuance, range, and intimacy are new for the band. Enriching those explorations are kindred musical spirits like pianist Thayer Sarrano, organist Jay Gonzalez (Drive-By Truckers), singer Kym Register (Loamlands), horn players William Washington and Theresa May (Mourning A BLKstar), and string arranger Annie Leeth, whose idiosyncratic contributions to the album deepen that sense of collectivism that the lyrics invoke.

The album was nearly named A People’s History, and its thirteen songs are focused on that mission–to investigate the band’s stomping grounds of Alabama and West Georgia, and to summon stories of that land’s peoples, rising up collectively to defend and liberate themselves from systems of power and exploitation. Just as the album’s music meanders between jagged rock’n’roll and churchy swells, feedback-drenched dirges and orchestral rave-ups, the lyrics lead us through those rich varied lands and time itself: black-masked protestors face SWAT tanks in smoggy cities; Muscogee warriors encircle a colonial fort along a muddy river; incarcerated workers noisily strike in a maximum-security prison surrounded by cottonfields; coal miners barricade the entrance of a mine; kids talk politics in the alley out back of a punk show; families gather outside a country church to prepare a dinner on the grounds. As we encounter these people and places, we sink deeper into what Bains calls “old-time,” that which connects us to those who have gone before, to the land, to each other, and to something deeper and older still.

While tackling such lofty political, historical and philosophical concepts, the album is also the band’s most intimate, vulnerable and spiritual to date. The perspective is both outward- and inward-facing, Bains never taking on the persona or experience of others, but rather writing about the way his own limited experience and perspective of the band’s place can lift the veils of false narratives, and uncover “piles of winding stories” through time. Throughout the record, great forces–whether exploitative or liberatory, reconciliatory or confrontational, grand or humble, condemning or merciful–show up in the smallest, most personal moments of our lives and relationships, both public and private. Little by little, we are drawn into a long arc of freedom, justice, and beloved community, and into a celebration of and thanksgiving for those who do its work. Bains uses words like a chef, fusing them together like the chips from a multitude of trees are pressed together into particle board. These are songs that are not just songs, but stories and poetry, as well, and Bains’s sense of melody makes the stories into anthems.

In an age characterized by individualism, and at a time when the past seems to be the sole domain of the status quo, Old-Time Folks illustrates the deep, thick, tangled roots of liberation, collectivism, mutuality and solidarity in the Deep South, and where they are flowering and bringing forth fruit today.

Tracklist:
1. Sponsored by the original Stonewall activists of the Gay Community Social Services of Seattle, Lavender Country's self-titled release was the brainchild of Patrick Haggerty, whose experiences as a gay liberation activist during the Stonewall era shaped him into a tenacious political savant. While Sokel brought riffs to the dub and hardcore blending Franklin and was the primary songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for AM/FM, releasing a number of albums on Polyvinyl Records, Goren was playing in punk bands Fracture and Armalite, and exploring the use of sequencers in his eccentric solo project Atom and His Package. In their respective projects the two toured the US and Canada together, released each other’s music on self-run labels, and Goren would even pay tribute to Sokel’s band on the Atom and His Package track “For Franklin”. Despite their closeness, they had never played in a band together until the Covid-19 pandemic

As life began to draw them in other directions, keeping up with the punk scene was no longer a priority. Even without their shared experience in music, Goren and Sokel remained in each other’s lives, ultimately finding themselves living next to each other just outside Philadelphia. As the Covid-19 pandemic forced people inside and the occasional neighborly interactions became a sole social outlet, the two shared concerns and anxieties. Conversations over the fence about politics and the increasingly confusing state of the world led the two to try writing music together, just to see what it would sound like. One song quickly became three, and soon they were recording what would come to be the self titled debut release from Dead Best.

Dead Best takes the raw pandemic expressions of two punk veterans and refines them into a ripping 13 tracks. Exhuming deep anxieties through pummelling guitars and frantic, distorted vocals, the LP is a brief but clear profile of Goren and Sokel’s combined creative voice. Grimy punk riffs propel tracks like “Life, Love and Liberty” and “Just Sounds” with the ferocious youthful intensity of Franklin or Armalite, while the frantic eccentricity of Atom and His Package shines through on “Zombies of Love”. Making the most of their fresh collaboration, Dead Best harnesses their years of shared history into a new sound, heard from the croaked vocals of “The Grind” to the instrumental grooves of “Dooms”.

The duo hadn’t initially intended the songs for release, viewing the process primarily as a coping mechanism during a period of intense upheaval. With this perspective in mind, the band set out not to clearly articulate a message with others, but to document emotional reactions for their own benefit. Abandoning pressures to “say something important”, Goren explains “at the age I’m at if I want to say something or argue something or persuade someone of something I think is important, there is media that is much more productive than making rhyming couplets”. The end result is a record that is musically emotive even when heavy distortion obscures the lyrics.

Tracklist:
1.
